(University of Virginia) The University of Virginia is pleased to announce a two-year award in the amount of $1,000,000 from Arcadia—a charitable fund of philanthropists Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin—in support of the “Advancing Hyku: Open Source Institutional Repository Platform Development” project.

(King County Library System) Effective November 1, 2019, the King County Library System will no longer purchase newly-released eBooks from Macmillan Publishers, one of five major publishers in the U.S. This decision comes after months of discussion and advocacy to urge Macmillan to reconsider instituting a new library eBook embargo, set to go into effect on November 1. Under Macmillan’s new lending model, public libraries of any size will only be allowed to purchase one copy of a newly-released eBook for the first eight weeks after publication.

(SirsiDynix) SirsiDynix is pleased to announce their newest customer, the Palos Verdes Library District. After careful deliberation, they have chosen to migrate their integrated library system (ILS) to SirsiDynix’s Symphony ILS and the next-generation SaaS-hosted Library Services Platform, BLUEcloud.

(Admin Kuhn) Die Bibliothek des Max-Delbrück-Centrums für molekulare Medizin in Berlin-Buch verwaltet ihre Bestände seit Oktober 2019 neu über das Open Source-Bibliothekssystem Koha. Der elektronische Bibliothekskatalog umfasst rund 43'000 Titeldatensätze sowie angehängte Normdaten für Personen, Körperschaften und Schlagwörter. Neben Katalog und Ausleihe wird auch die Erwerbung eingesetzt.

(Recorded Books) Princeton University Press and RBmedia today announced an exclusive licensing agreement to publish over 120 audiobooks in the next three years. The collaboration brings together Princeton University Press’ world-class content and RBmedia’s position as a market leader in scholarly, trade, and reference audiobook publishing.

(Kanopy) Kanopy, the free-to-the-user video streaming platform for critically-acclaimed films and documentaries, today announced that veteran higher education executive Kevin Sayar has been named as the company’s new CEO, effective October 21. Sayar succeeds Olivia Humphrey, who is relocating with her family back to her native Australia. Humphrey will remain as Kanopy’s Executive Chairman of the Board.

(ProQuest) According to the latest report from ProQuest affiliate Bowker, self-publishing grew at a rate of 40 percent in 2018 – and shows no signs of slowing down. Bowker’s annual study, “Self-Publishing in the United States, 2013-2018,” highlights self-publishing trends based on the number of ISBNs registered in the Bowker Books In Print® database. A book’s ISBN is a 13-digit product identifier used by libraries, booksellers, publishers and internet retailers for ordering, listing, sales records and inventory.

(Overdrive) In support of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Libraries’ report, Public Libraries: The Case for Support, Rakuten OverDrive presented evidence in the House of Lords in Parliament on 15 October. This report calls for sustainable UK library funding by providing data and research on libraries’ positive impact on users, communities and the local economy.

(Capira Technologies) Capira Technologies continues to expand its growing list of library clients with a new partnership with the Los Angeles Public Library. The Library system—which represents the largest population in the nation - more than 4 million people —has signed on to begin the development of a custom mobile library app to better engage LAPL's patrons.

(Soutron Limited) Soutron are delighted to announce authorised business partner in Ethiopia, MAKE Enterprise, have been for the last two years working towards a new solution for the National Archives and Library Agency of Ethiopia.After a thorough tender process, the software provided by Soutron was chosen to help the National Archives and Library Agency of Ethiopia manage their extensive collections, archives and records.

(Tech Logic) Tech Logic has appointed Jeff McDaniel as the Director of Sales and Business Development.

(Equinox) Equinox is pleased to announce the successful migration of the Eastern Cluster of Lutheran Seminaries to Koha, the first open source Integrated Library System to be used worldwide. Their migration involved 318,801 bibliographic records and 2,929 patrons at the university. Equinox provided authority control and data services in addition to Koha support, hosting, and implementation. Remote training for Koha was also provided as part of the migration by Equinox.

(Canadian Association of Research Libraries) The Canadian Association of Research Libraries and Library and Archives Canada (LAC) have joined forces to improve preservation of Canadian publications in Canadian libraries. CARL member libraries and others are committed to ensuring proper stewardship of our Canadian published heritage, in both print and digital forms. With space and resources at a premium, collective efforts to manage print publications are becoming increasingly necessary. In order to study the current situation and recommend future action, CARL and LAC have established a working group to design and implement a national strategy for collective print preservation and access for Canadian publications, building on some very successful regional initiatives. Digitization will be relevant as it impacts print retention requirements and the provision of access. To ensure the national strategy draws upon and complements similar efforts in other countries, the working group will also liaise and collaborate with international print preservation initiatives.
