(DuraSpace) The Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded DuraSpace a National Digital Platform Planning Grant for $49,279 to investigate barriers to upgrading hundreds of U.S.-based libraries and archives running unsupported versions of Fedora. In consultation with stakeholders this project will conduct an environmental scan of relevant community initiatives, and gather primary research data to inform recommendations to reduce barriers to upgrading to the most current version of Fedora.

(DuraSpace) Debra Hanken Kurtz will leave her post as CEO at DuraSpace to serve as the Associate University Librarian for Technology Services at Arizona State University Library. As of June 1, Erin Tripp, Business Development Manager at DuraSpace, will serve as the Interim Chief Executive Officer. Valorie Hollister, DuraSpace Director of Membership and Finance, and Bill Branan, Duraspace Services Technical Director, will assist Ms. Tripp with the transition.

(DuraSpace) After serving for several years on the Board, and for three years on the Executive Group, Laura Wood, Associate University Librarian for Research and Education at Harvard Library, is stepping down from her post as Board President. To fill this vacancy the Board has approved the following slate: Tyler Walters, Dean, University Libraries and Professor, Virginia Tech, will serve as President, Tom Cramer, Assistant University Librarian and Director, Digital Library Systems & Services Chief Technology Strategist Stanford University Libraries, and Heather Joseph, Executive Director of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), will remain in their current positions as Vice President and Secretary, respectively, and Rob Cartolano, Associate Vice President for Digital Programs and Technology Services for Columbia University Libraries/Information Services, will serve as Treasurer to fill the position vacated by Tyler. Laura will remain on the Board through the spring.

(Lyrasis) The Boards of LYRASIS and DuraSpace, two leading member-based non-profit organizations serving libraries, archives, museums, as well as the broader scholarly, cultural heritage and technology communities, have unanimously approved an "Intent to Merge". LYRASIS, which serves more than 4000 members and partner organizations by delivering e-resources, strategic licensing, training and digital technology resources, and DuraSpace, a leader in the development and deployment of open source technologies and services that promote durable access and discovery of digital data, will begin next steps to determine the feasibility of a combined organization. These next steps will include a deeper assessment of the individual organizations and how they might partner effectively, seeking community feedback on the proposal during a public phase of the due diligence investigation.

(DuraSpace) The Digital Public Library of America, Stanford University, and the DuraSpace organization announced that their joint initiative has been awarded a $2M National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Nicknamed Hydra-in-a-Box, the project aims foster a new, national, library network through a community-based repository system, enabling discovery, interoperability and reuse of digital resources by people from this country and around the world.

(DuraSpace) The DuraSpace Board of Directors has chosen Debra Hanken Kurtz to serve as the new CEO for the Organization. Kurtz is currently the Executive Director of the Texas Digital Library. She will begin in her new role on February 16, 2015 and establish an office in Austin, Texas to manage DuraSpace business operations.

(DuraSpace) Artefactual has announced the release of Archivematica 1.3.0 with full DuraCloud integration. Archivematica is an open source digital preservation system with a web-based dashboard for ingesting digital holdings and generating Archival Information Packages (AIPs). DuraCloud is an open source cloud-based archiving and preservation service platform that manages and preserves digital objects in secure, replicated storage. Archivematica 1.3.0 now features the ability to configure the storage option to deposit AIPs into DuraCloud archival cloud storage via the web-based dashboard. Institutions and organizations may now choose to implement the Archivematica open source preservation stack in-house, or to take advantage of the DuraCloud hosted service for long-term secure archival storage directly from their hosted Archivematica dashboard.

(DuraSpace) The DuraSpace organization announced that Dr. Layne Johnson has accepted a position with DuraSpace as the project director for the VIVO project effective May 1, 2014. In his role as VIVO project director, Layne will work closely with the community and steering group to set the vision and long term roadmap for VIVO, the open source semantic web platform that enables research discovery.

(DuraSpace) Working with Dell, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has created a new digital archive for its university system that simplifies how it manages digital assets, including rare books and faculty intellectual property output such as research documents, papers and lectures — content typically produced in multiple digital formats. The new archive reduces storage costs and streamlines the management, retention and protection of scholarly works through a solution based on the Dell DX Object Storage Platform and DuraSpace Open Source Fedora Commons Repository Software. Critical for the university was the ability to meet today’s needs and to scale efficiently over time as digital content evolves and grows.
