(Digital Science) Figshare, the online digital repository for academic research, launched its annual report The State of Open Data 2019, to coincide with global celebrations around Open Access Week. The report is the fourth in the series and includes survey results and a collection of articles from global industry experts, as well as a foreword from Paul Ayris, Pro-Vice-Provost (UCL Library Services). The State of Open Data is now the longest running longitudinal study on the subject, which was created in 2016 to examine attitudes and experiences of researchers working with open data – sharing it, reusing it, and redistributing it.

(Digital Science) Research industry technology company Digital Science has today revealed the latest winners of its prestigious Catalyst Grant award: BPT Analytics, Intoolab and MLprior have been awarded a grant. An international initiative to develop innovative projects and technologies The Catalyst Grant offers an award of up to £25,000 or $30,000 for concepts with the potential to transform scientific and academic research. Digital Science is well known for its engagement with the research community, and the grant supports ideas at an early stage of development, without the need for a complete business or development plan.

(Digital Science) Digital Science has launched a report focusing on falsifiability and reproducibility in scientific research. The report addresses three areas including appropriate documentation and sharing of research data, clear analysis and processes, and the sharing of code. Making Science Better: Reproducibility, Falsifiability and the Scientific Method looks at the current state of reproducibility in 2019, as well as the importance of falsifiability in the research process.The analysis comes from the Digital Science portfolio company, Ripeta, which aims to make better science easier by identifying and highlighting the important parts of research that should be transparently presented in a manuscript and other materials.

(Digital Science) Digital Science, a leader in scholarly technology, is pleased to announce a collaboration with the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI) that will give ISSI members enhanced access to Dimensions and Altmetric data for scientometric research.ISSI is an international association of scholars and professionals active in the interdisciplinary study science of science, science communication, and science policy. The ISSI community advances the boundaries of quantitative science studies, from theoretical, empirical, and practical perspectives.Starting on October 1 2019, ISSI members will formally be invited to apply for no-cost access to Altmetric and Dimensions web tools and APIs. A committee of ISSI members will provide expert assessment of researchers’ applications and guidance on using Altmetric and Dimensions in their research.

(Digital Science) The Nature Index 2019 annual tables were released this week and showed the United States, China and Germany as the three top countries in the country ranking. In the institutional ranking, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harvard University, and the Max Planck Society held their positions as world leading institutions. For the first time, the Nature Index annual tables also include a normalized ranking tracked using Digital Science’s Dimensions database. This takes into account the number of high-quality articles published as a proportion of an institute’s overall output in the natural sciences.
