NEH announces $37.5 million for 240 humanities projects nationwide. The National Endowment for the Humanities announced $37.5 million in grants for 240 humanities projects across the country. These grants will support a feature-length documentary on the Women Airforce Service Pilots, the first female pilots to fly for the U.S. military in World War II, and their fight for recognition as veterans after the war; a new book on the history of the travel souvenir; and the refinement of remote sensing methods for conducting noninvasive surveys and analysis of buried archaeological sites of Indigenous settlements in the US. This round of funding, NEH's third and last for fiscal year 2024, will support vital humanities education, research, preservation, and public programs. These peer-reviewed grants were awarded in addition to $65 million in annual operating support provided to the national network of state and jurisdictional humanities councils. [Full Announcement].

NEH Announces $26.2 Million for 238 Humanities Projects Nationwide. The National Endowment for the Humanities announced $26.2 million in grants for 238 humanities projects across the country. Grants awarded today will underwrite a new permanent exhibition at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh on how the Nile River shaped ancient Egyptians' ideas of life and death; provide for treatment and digitization of photo collections at Appalshop documenting Appalachia's social, cultural, and economic history that were damaged by catastrophic flooding in Kentucky; and support archaeological research at the sites of two former boarding schools on the Blackfeet reservation in Montana. ByWater Solutions announces December 2022 Community Giveback Winner and donates to Florida Library Association's Hurricane Relief Fund. The December 2022 winner of the ByWater Community Giveback is the Washington County Public Library in Florida. The funds will be used to support the library's Tiny Tots program. This will build on the success of the interactive centers that are part of the Tiny Tots programs. Each month, youth services staff create a themed center filled with activities. Each week, there are new activities within the theme. Since its inception in 2021, library staff have a variety of themed centers including a hospital theme, a vegetable stand theme, an ice cream theme, and a camping theme. The funds will help to add extra themed centers and allow for the purchase of puzzles, manipulative materials, and games that could be used long-term to ensure continued success of our program. Texas universities reach historic deal with Elsevier: TLCUA saves Texas universities millions collectively. Texas Library Coalition for United Action announce that it has concluded negotiations with Elsevier, and all TLCUA members have signed or are finalizing new agreements for subscription journal access. In 2019, 44 public and private university campuses across Texas joined together to form TLCUA to think creatively about access to faculty publications and the sustainability of journal subscriptions. TLCUA has negotiated with Elsevier, the world's largest publisher of scientific journals, including The Lancet and Cell and over 2,500 other journals covering topics in medicine, biology, psychology, engineering, business and more. Bookworms turn to mystery and thriller novels throughout COVID-19. Australians sought escapist fiction to get through major lockdowns and restrictions brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, with almost half of this year's top 20 most borrowed books listed as mysteries and thrillers in Civica's 2021 Libraries Index. The Index, now in its sixth year, assessed borrowing data from 34 million loans across 104 regional and metropolitan libraries in Australia and New Zealand between 1st April 2020 – 31st March 2021. Civica, provider of the cloud-based Spydus library management system to schools, TAFEs and local government, partnered with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) to create the Civica Libraries Index.
