NISO Dr. Siva Vaidhyanathan to Give Opening Keynote at NISO Plus 2022. The National Information Standards Organization announced that Dr. Siva Vaidhyanathan will give the opening keynote at their NISO Plus conference, on February 15, 2022. [Full Announcement].

NISO PALCI and NISO announce consortium agreement. The Partnership for Academic Library Collaboration & Innovation (PALCI) and the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) today announced a consortium agreement to provide NISO Library Standards Alliance (LSA) membership to all PALCI members for an initial period of three years, beginning January 2022. NISO NISO voting members approve work on Recommended Practice for Retracted Research. The National Information Standards Organization announced that its proposed work item for a Communication of Retractions, Removals, and Expressions of Concern (CORREC) Recommended Practice has been approved by NISO Voting Members. Retracted research is published work that is withdrawn, removed, or otherwise invalidated from the scientific and scholarly record. Although relatively rare, retracted research—including unsupported or fabricated data, fundamental errors, and unreproducible results—can be inadvertently propagated within the digital scholarly record through citations. The CORREC Recommended Practice is intended to help address this problem, by clearly identifying parties involved in the retraction process, along with their responsibilities, actions, notifications, and the metadata necessary to communicate retracted research. NISO NISO awarded Mellon Funding for controlled digital lending project. The National Information Standards Organizatio announced that it has received a grant of $125,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support the development of a consensus framework for implementing controlled digital lending of book content by libraries, which has been approved by NISO members as a new initiative. NISO New NISO Project—Package Identifiers. The National Information Standards Organization announced a new project, recently approved by its voting members, to develop a Recommended Practice for Unique Electronic Resource Package Identifiers. Volunteers are now invited to join a new Working Group to create a set of draft recommendations for public comment. [Full Announcement].

NISO NISO’s Updated Access & License Indicators (ALI) Recommended Practice Now Available For Public Comment. The National Information Standards Organizatio announced that its draft updated Access & License Indicators Recommended Practice (NISO RP-22-202X) is available for public comment through September 18. Originally published in 2015, this Recommended Practice defines the metadata indicators used to indicate free-to-read content, as well as for linking to license terms for the use/re-use of that content. The public comment focus will be limited to the changed/added material in the Recommended Practice. [Full Announcement].

NISO STM’s Peer Review Taxonomy to be formalized as an ANSI/NISO standard. The National Information Standards Organization and STM, the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers announced the formation of a new NISO Working Group to formalize the Peer Review Taxonomy as an ANSI/NISO standard, following approval of the project by NISO Voting Members late last month. NISO invites volunteers to join the soon-to-be-formed Working Group, which will be merged with the existing STM Working Group. [Full Announcement].

NISO NISO Announces Publication of Updated Standard on Criteria for Indexes (ANSI/NISO Z39.4). The National Information Standards Organization announced the publication of its updated ANSI/NISO Z39.4, Criteria for Indexes, incorporating feedback from the public comment period earlier this year. It replaces the original ANSI/NISO Z39.4 standard (Guidelines for Indexes and Related Information Retrieval Devices), last updated in 1984, and is an updated and expanded version of NISO's Guidelines for Indexes and Related Information Retrieval Devices. NISO NISO Announces Publication of Updated Journal Article Tag Suite—Version 1.3. The National Information Standards Organization published the latest update to the JATS: Journal Article Tag Suite standard (ANSI/NISO Z39.96-2021), Version 1.3. JATS provides a common XML format in which publishers and archives can exchange journal content—both articles (text and graphics) and non-article material such as letters, editorials, and book and product reviews. The Tag Suite is the complete set of elements and attributes described in the standard. Along with these descriptions, the standard includes three implementations of the suite, called Tag Sets, which are intended to provide models for archiving, publishing, and authoring journal article content. NISO Announcing The NISO Board Of Directors For 2021-22. The National Information Standards Organization announced the results of its recent Board elections for the term beginning July 1, 2021. Mary Sauer-Games, Vice President, Product Management, OCLC, Inc, will transition to the role of Chair of the NISO Board, having served as Vice Chair for the past year. She is replaced as Vice Chair by Maria Stanton, Director of Production, Atla, who will assume the role of Chair for 2022-23 next July. Peter Simon, Vice President, Product Management, NewsBank, Inc, rotates to the position of Past Chair, having served as NISO Chair for 2020-21. In addition, Wayne Strickland, Acting Associate Director for the Office of Program Management, NTIS will be appointed Treasurer as of July 1. [Full Announcement].

NISO NISO members approve proposal for a new Recommended Practice to Update Author Name Changes. The National Information Standards Organization announced that their Voting Members have approved the formation of a new Working Group to develop a Recommended Practice to Update Author Name Changes in the Academic Publication Record after Publication as a Result of Identity Change. NISO NISO announces invigorated commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) today announced two important actions to support increased diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in its work and its community. First, following Board approval of the NISO DEI Policy in January, a full DEI Committee has now been formed, led by NISO Board member Maria Stanton, who is Director of Production at Atla. Second, later this year, NISO will be hosting a workshop on DEI and standards, organized by the Committee, to help identify and prioritize key areas of opportunity and development. NISO NISO Recommended Practice for Content Platform Migrations now open for public comment. The National Information Standards Organization made its new draft Recommended Practice for Content Platform Migrations available for public comment. The result of nearly two years of collaboration between the librarians, publishers, and content platform providers on the Content Platform Migrations Working Group, this Recommended Practice provides a standard process and recommendations to improve communication between all parties involved before, during, and after migration. NISO Announcing NISO’s 2021 Awardees. The winners of the National Information Standards Organization's 2021 awards and scholarships were announced. The recipient of this year's prestigious Miles Conrad Award for lifetime achievement is Heather Joseph, Executive Director of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition. This year's NISO Fellow is George Kerscher, CIO of the DAISY Consortium and Senior Advisor, Global Literacy, Benetech, for his invaluable work on information standards for accessibility and content distribution. The Ann Marie Cunningham Award honors NISO volunteers who routinely go above and beyond the normal call of duty to serve the organization. This year's recipients are Athena Hoeppner of the University of Central Florida, and Julie Zhu of the IEEE. [Full Announcement].

NISO NISO’s Recommended Practice on Reproducibility Badging and Definitions now published. The National Information Standards Organization announced the publication of its Recommended Practice, RP-31-2021, Reproducibility Badging and Definitions. Developed by the NISO Taxonomy, Definitions, and Recognition Badging Scheme Working Group, this new Recommended Practice provides a set of recognition standards that can be deployed across scholarly publishing outputs to easily recognize and reward the sharing of data and methods. NISO Four Additional Publishers Adopt NISO’s KBART Guidelines. The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) is pleased to announce that four more publishers have recently started supplying metadata that conforms to the NISO recommended practice, KBART: Knowledge Bases And Related Tools (NISO RP-9-2014). A total of 62 publishers have now achieved KBAR compliance since the recommended practice was originally published in 2010. [Full Announcement].

NISO NISO’s updated draft standard on Criteria for Indexes now open for public comment. The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) announced today that the Z39.4 Criteria for Indexes Working Group has released its draft standard for public comment. It replaces the original ANSI/NISO Z39.4 standard (Guidelines for Indexes and Related Information Retrieval Devices) and is an updated and expanded version of NISO's Guidelines for Indexes and Related Information Retrieval Devices (a technical report, TR02-1997). NISO CRKN and NISO Announce Canadian Consortium Agreement. The Canadian Research Knowledge Network and the National Information Standards Organization announced a consortium agreement to provide NISO Library Standards Alliance membership to all CRKN institutional members, as well as associate members participating in CRKN's content licensing program. NISO Heather Joseph Named As NISO's 2021 Miles Conrad Awardee. The National Information Standards Organization announced that Heather Joseph, Executive Director of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), will be the recipient of the 2021 Miles Conrad Award, a lifetime achievement award for those working in the information community. NISO Zeynep Tufekci Announced as Closing Keynote for NISO Plus 2021.
