South Australia Universities select Voyager System

DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, April 30, 2001: Endeavor Information Systems announced today the Vice-Chancellors of Adelaide University, Flinders University and the University of South Australia, all located in Adelaide, South Australia, have signed contracts authorizing the purchase and use of the Voyager integrated library management system for each of the universities' libraries.

The cooperative decision by the three universities marks the first time that all universities in one Australian state have collaborated on the selection of a library management system. Students and staff of all three universities in South Australia, as well as all external students of the universities, will have access to library resources and services through the Voyager system. The Voyager purchase is the culmination of more than a year of intensive evaluation by staff members at all three universities' libraries. The system will be available for staff and student use early in 2002.

The common system complements the existing wide range of collaborative projects developed and managed by Unilibraries SA, www.lib.flinders.edu.au/ulsa,/a>, the collaborative planning group of the three university libraries.

"We are delighted to be associated with a company such as Endeavor, with its impressive record of successful implementation of the Voyager system in such a wide range of university and research libraries throughout the world -- including Cornell University, Edinburgh University, Monash University and the Library of Congress," explained Dr. Alan Bundy, University Librarian at the University of South Australia.

"We regard the purchase of the Voyager system as a wise investment which will greatly enhance our ability to deliver education and research support to our university community from an ever widening range of digital resources and services," said Bill Cations, University Librarian at Flinders University. "I would also pay tribute to the professionalism and helpfulness of the Endeavor staff with whom we negotiated. They were outstanding and a reflection of the quality of the company."

"With Voyager, library users can expect a more attractive and efficient computer interface to library services and resources, and greatly enhanced access to the burgeoning range of materials accessible electronically," said Ray Choate, University Librarian at Adelaide University. "We expect to see benefits in the Library's internal operations, and these also will strengthen the quality of our services to users."

The three university libraries comprise a total of 15 libraries, 338 library staff, 3.6 million volumes of monographs and journals and a large and growing collection of electronic resources. The libraries, with a combined annual budget of more than $35 million (Australian), provide education and research resources and services for 46,000 academic staff and students.

"The University of South Australia, Flinders University and Adelaide University are a wonderful example of the progress that can be made when libraries see a common goal for the future of collection development and management," said Jane Burke, Endeavor President & CEO. "Endeavor is very pleased to be working with these universities to provide Voyager for enhanced staff capabilities and student resource discovery. The Voyager system is an investment that will continue to benefit the libraries for many years to come."
