The New York Public Library and LYRASIS have announced that, following a two-year collaboration to empower public libraries around the country to gain control over their e-book delivery platforms, they will be expanding their efforts on delivering a library driven library empowered ebook platform, pursuing two different opportunities towards the same goal. ProQuest, NYU Pilot Program offers students and faculty instant access to 150,000 Ebooks via app. New York University (NYU) Libraries and EdTech leader ProQuest have launched a pilot project that will make over 150,000 scholarly titles available to students and faculty via their mobile devices. NYU users can access coursebooks, ebooks, and reference works from major publishers through an e-reader app called SimplyE. [Full Announcement].

The American Samoan State Library chooses SimplyE for its statewide eBook program, hosted by LYRASIS. In partnership with DPLA the SimplyE eBook platform will be deployed with an inclusive and diverse and balanced eBook collection curated to best serve the American Samoan population including over 6,000 free unlimited access eBooks, which you can see on the DPLA Open Bookshelf. For Justin Maga, State Librarian for American Samoa and leaders of Feleti Barstow Public Library, the flexibility to work with multiple eBook vendors and publishers through one integrated platform is perhaps the most intriguing SimplyE feature. Washington State Library announces partnership with LYRASIS to Produce a New e-book Platform for All Citizens in Washington State. New collaborative effort to develop a national digital ebooks platform for libraries announced. The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), The New York Public Library (NYPL), and LYRASIS are pleased to announce a new collaboration to help provide all public libraries with a free, open, library-controlled platform for managing their ebook and audiobook services. Through this newly-established collaboration, DPLA, NYPL, and LYRASIS will each offer core services and tools that, in combination, will provide public libraries across the United States with a full-service pathway to acquire and deliver ebooks and audiobooks through a library-controlled marketplace and platform. DPLA receives $1.5 million grant from Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The Digital Public Library of America announced that the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has awarded DPLA a $1.5 million grant. The grant will enable DPLA to expand its efforts to provide an improved ebook experience for patrons through their libraries, building on its cultural heritage aggregation program. LYRASIS announces James English as Product Development Strategist for Library Simplified/SimplyE, signalling ongoing commitment to support public library open source initiatives. LYRASIS announced that James English will be joining LYRASIS as the Product Development Strategist for Library Simplified/SimplyE, signalling the organization's ongoing commitment to supporting public libraries and creating a strong open source community. Library Simplified is an open source eReading platform initially developed by The New York Public Library with funding from the the Institute of Museum and Library Services to help libraries manage eBook collections, boost circulation and improve access to books to encourage reading and literacy. SimplyE is the mobile application that gives users one-click access to their library's eBook catalog with just a library card through the Library Simplified middleware platform, simplifying a user's ability to securely and privately connect with their library. LYRASIS and DPLA Announce Partnership to Provide eContent Services through Library Simplified. LYRASIS and DPLA are proud to announce a partnership to pilot a new eContent delivery and management service for libraries. The new initiative will offer cloud-based hosting of Library Simplified, an open source, middleware solution and administrative tool for libraries used to merge content from multiple sources, add open content, manage and curate collections and make them available in SimplyE. SimplyE is the open source iOS and Android app that provides robust multi-library discovery and reading capabilities. With the launch of this service, libraries can now acquire eContent in the DPLA Exchange (exchange.dp.la), manage and merge it with other content through the hosted Library Simplified administrative interface, then deliver to users in SimplyE. Together these services offer, for the first time, the possibility of a seamless and fully library-based delivery platform for licensed and open eContent. [Full Announcement].

Datalogics partners with Califa Group to Integrate SimplyE Solution into Six California Libraries. Datalogics, the premier source for PDF and eBook technologies, is excited to announce a partnership with Califa Group to implement the SimplyE solution in California libraries. Datalogics will work with six libraries within the California library system to begin the integration. Califa, the largest library network in California, is a nonprofit library membership consortium of more than 220 libraries. In an effort to streamline their patronís access to eBooks, they chose to partner with Datalogics to deploy SimplyE, a complete solution that would bring content from multiple sources together in one place. Patrons can browse through titles, checkout, and start reading all within the same application. The New York Public Library and the European Digital Reading Lab team up for a better e-reading experience.. EDRLab and NYPL have decided to collaborate on the development of open-sourced mobile applications based on the Readium EPUB 3 reading engine. This collaboration has three aspects: ebook lending management, accessibility and enhancements of the user experience on mobile devices. EDRLab is currently developing Readium LCP, a vendor-neutral, interoperable and accessible Digital Rights Management technology that is embeddable in any application based on the open-source Readium SDK. EDRLab will help on the integration of Readium LCP inside the Library Simplified codebase so that library patrons can have, at last, a fluid experience when lending ebooks. [Full Announcement].

Minitex awarded $695,000 federal grant to enhance ebooks app. Library users will more easily access ebooks across multiple systems thanks to SimplyE, a free app for phones and tablets that is being further developed at Minitex, a joint program of the University of Minnesota Libraries and the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. The current version of SimplyE, to be released later this year, eliminates the need for a patron to switch between multiple ebook vendor apps to access collections from a single library. The Minitex-led phase of development will enable a patron to access ebooks from their public library, their college library, and other shared statewide collections (such as Ebooks Minnesota), all in one app. Additional possible enhancements will make SimplyE more useful to researchers and students.
