In the first week of February, the National Hemophilia Foundation implemented KLAS v.6.3 for use in their HANDI Division. HANDI is the NHF's information center. Their mission is to educate the public and facilitate the search for cures by gathering and disseminating information on bleeding disorders.

HANDI sends out articles, pamphlets and other materials by request to patrons across the country. Their change from a home-grown system to KLAS version 6.3 allows them to better serve their patrons in several ways. By extensive use of the Cataloguing Module, HANDI operators are able search their holdings more thoroughly to determine the combination of materials that will best serve the patron. By consulting the patron's hashad list, the operators can avoid sending duplicative materials. The operators can also determine the location and availability of preprinted materials. The preparation of pick lists has been streamlined and simplified, and the creation of form letters to be sent out to the patrons with the requested items has become more uniform.

The NHF installed KLAS v.6.3 on a SCO-UNIX database server in their existing office Novell network environment. Staff use Pentium processor Windows 95 workstations to operate in a client-server mode.
