(Urban Libraries Council) The Urban Libraries Council has launched a new initiative to empower North American public libraries to stand at the forefront of the movement for an equitable and inclusive future for the storage, privacy and application of data as AI technology becomes more ubiquitous. This initiative began with a working group meeting held January 9-10 that convened library leaders from across the U.S. and Canada to discuss opportunities for libraries to collaborate in order to get ahead of the potential risks presented by AI and to maximize the technology’s potential for public good.

(PTFS Europe) The Royal Asiatic Society selected the Koha library management solution to replace their existing system during Autumn 2018. We are pleased to announce that the Society has successfully gone live with their new Koha system. PTFS Europe carried out the initial implementation and now provides on-going hosting and support services.

(Overdrive) Rakuten OverDrive announced today that 65 public library systems exceeded 1 million or more digital book loans in 2018, the most ever to reach this milestone. This illustrates how libraries have transformed using digital lending of ebooks, audiobooks and magazines. The total number of libraries represents a significant increase from the 58 systems that surpassed 1 million checkouts in 2017. These libraries are based in the US, Canada, Singapore and New Zealand.

(Preservica) The Liverpool Record Office, part of Liverpool City Council’s Libraries and Information Services, has chosen Preservica’s cloud-based active digital preservation software to create a new online archive and to digitally preserve culturally significant records dating back to the 13th century.

(ByWater Solutions) ByWater Solutions, an open source community contributor and America’s forefront provider of Koha support, announced today that the Benedictine Library at Thomas More University, in Kentucky is now live on Koha with ByWater Solutions! ByWater completed the transition of the library’s 88,000 plus holdings from Voyager ILS and is providing ongoing support services to the library.

(NISO) The National Information Standard Organization (NISO) Voting Members have approved a project to develop a recommended practice pertaining to reproducibility in the computational and computing sciences. This work will examine existing taxonomies and badging schemes to define various levels of reproducibility and communicate these in the publishing process. Stakeholders, including publishers and not-for-profit societies in the engineering and computing sciences fields, industry associations, and academic libraries are invited to participate in the working group that is now starting up.

(ProQuest) Librarians can now order print book titles directly from the Alma library services platform, thanks to a new integration between Alma and OASIS, ProQuest’s search, selection, and ordering system. Alma users have the option to search the extensive OASIS catalog, check book prices, and execute an order – all without leaving the Alma interface.

(Follett) Follett has released Destiny 16.5, a new version of the market-leading solution featuring enhancements to Destiny Library Manager, Destiny Discover, and Destiny Resource Manager. Destiny solutions serve more than 65,000 schools and libraries and are used in 23 of the 25 largest U.S. school districts.

(Mitinet Library Services) Mitinet Library Services, a leader in metadata management, is pleased to announce it has received a platinum award in LibraryWorks’ fifth annual Modern Library Awards (MLAs.) The MLAs were created to recognize the top products and services in the library industry in a truly unbiased format. Products and services were submitted in the fall using a simple application, and then were posted on a private site with an enhanced description and attendant materials. These products were batched into small groups and sent to the LibraryWorks database of more than 80,000 librarians at public, K-12, academic, and special libraries. Only customers with experience with these products/services in their facilities were permitted to judge the products/services, resulting in a truly unbiased score.
