StorLogic Announces Selection of Windows NT Embedded 4.0: New Operating System Reduces Time to Market and Expands Capabilities for New Line of NAS Appliance Solutions

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Florida, August 23, 1999 -- StorLogic, Inc., the leader in storage networking technology, today announced the selection of Microsoft Windows NT Embedded 4.0 operating system for use in its next-generation line of Network Attached Storage (NAS) appliances.

After careful analysis, StorLogic arrived at their decision based on the following criteria:

  • Availability of applications
  • Interoperability with majority of client systems
  • Time to market
  • Opportunity to add value (Intellectual Property)
  • Migration to Storage Area Networks (SAN)

"In terms of the determining factors used in our decision process, Windows NT Embedded 4.0 surpassed all of the other candidates in every category from both a development and user functionality standpoint," said Steven Paulhus, vice president of Business Development at StorLogic.

Historically, embedded systems vendors have developed closed solutions based on fragmented and proprietary platforms. Windows NT Embedded 4.0 provides a comprehensive open systems set of technologies from which vendors can choose operating system features; this results in tailored functionality for embedded products, reducing system requirements and costs. Powerful authoring tools make it easy for developers to integrate Windows NT Embedded 4.0 into their designs and allow them to spend less time developing and supporting proprietary operating system code.

"By utilizing Windows NT Embedded 4.0, StorLogic no longer has to spend resources developing basic software/OS/client functionality, but can instead focus on the development of its added-value middleware," said Vince Mendillo, lead product manager for Windows NT Embedded at Microsoft Corp.

Since vertical applications will dictate NAS appliance deployment, the widespread application availability and support that Windows NT Embedded 4.0 provides will allow StorLogic to easily build powerful NAS appliances for use in Internet caching, e-mail, database, Web serving and small office networking implementations.

Windows NT Embedded 4.0 delivers a variety of new features designed specifically for the embedded developer, such as support for headless operation in which no mouse, keyboard or display devices are required. It also includes the complete set of features and functionality already included in the Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0 platforms, including the latest Service Pack, version 5.

"Although the NAS market in terms of revenue is exciting, it also provides a transitional stepping stone into the SAN market, which possesses even greater potential,"added Paulhus."Windows NT Embedded 4.0 again proved to be the ideal choice to complement our SAN Ready Architecture (SRA) strategy. This transition strategy is also consistent with the Windows NT enterprise strategies being planned or implemented at many large OEMs and corporations."
