MCHENRY, Ill., April 19, 2017 – Follett, in partnership with Northern Illinois University (NIU), will host a literacy conference event that features an impressive array of award-winning authors and is designed to give K-12 educators access to hands-on professional development. Titled "ReadingCon: Collaborating for Literacy," the conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (CDT) on Thursday, June 22 at NIU Conference Center in Naperville, Ill.
The conference will be led by Shannon McClintock Miller, a highly recognized and respected K-12 library leader who previously was a district teacher librarian in Iowa and is author of the blog, The Library Voice. Miller is a spokesperson for Future Ready Librarians and Project Connect, a national initiative sponsored by Follett to advocate for school libraries and elevate the role of the librarian in K-12 schools.
"The conference focus will be on literacy and how we, as education stewards, can make a difference in the students we serve," Miller said. "We also want to bring educators together to discuss the topics that are trending in today's K-12 market."
Among the many authors confirmed to participate are writer-artist Gene Luen Yang, who was named the fifth National Ambassador for Young People's Literature for 2016-17; Kwame Alexander, a poet, educator and New York Times best-selling author; plus Tim Green, Jennifer L. Holm, Neal Schusterman, and many others.
The authors will participate in breakout sessions, giving attendees a chance to collaborate with both them and fellow educators about literacy strategies in K-12 schools.
Early-bird registration is available until Friday, May 5 for $75 per person, and includes:
