New Service simplifies linked data adoption

Emeryville, CA. Innovative announced a new service which simplifies a library's publication of Linked Data records dramatically, reducing the time and effort for libraries to reveal their collections to the Web and contribute learning to the LibHub Initiative. The new Output Data for Libhub Service extracts library records from the database of any Innovative ILS or Service Platform (Sierra, Polaris ILS, Virtua, or Millennium) and formats them for transformation to Linked Data vocabularies including BIBFRAME and schema.org to ultimately publish and find on the Web.

The new service, which is available as a one-time full database output with optional monthly updates, removes any barriers of staffing or time and makes it easier for libraries to take part in the Linked Data initiative. Library records are output in MARC/XML for sending to Zepheira. Zepheira transforms the records to BIBFRAME and publishes them to the Web, where their presence and formatting makes them accessible to search engines. Search results can then bring the user directly into the originating catalog, at the record level!

"Innovative is an active sponsor of the LibHub Initiative, so we could provide opportunities like this to our customers," says Gene Shimshock, Vice President, Global Marketing at Innovative. "The new Output Data for Libhub Service is just one way we are aiming to assist libraries to explore the coming promises of Linked Data."

Jeff Penka, Vice President of Product Management at Zepheira, founders of the LibHub Initiative, says "libraries, partners, and vendors working together is a key aspect of the Libhub Initiative's strategy to explore new ways to grow Web-based visibility and usage of library resources."

About the Libhub Initiative

The Libhub Initiative was introduced in 2014 to encourage an industry-wide focus on the collective visibility of libraries and their resources on the Web. The Libhub Initiative aims to find common ground for libraries, providers, and partners to publish and use data with non-proprietary, Web standards. Libraries can then communicate in a way Web applications understand and Web users can see through the use of enabling technology like linked data and shared vocabularies such as schema.org and BIBFRAME. The Libhub Initiative uniquely prioritizes the linking of these newly exposed library resources to each other and to other resources across the Web, a critical requirement of increased Web visibility.
