Librarians Part of the Story at SXSW Interactive 2014
Innovative Booth for Libraries Provides Valuable Forum for Conversations
Emeryville, CA -- March 31, 2014. Innovative provided a platform for library professionals and advocates at the recent South By Southwest (SXSW) Interactive conference in Austin, TX as the perfect venue for libraries to demonstrate that they are increasingly playing a role with technology and media partners. Librarians at SXSW made those connections, joined in the conversation about cutting-edge technology, and discussed the value of libraries in the Innovative Booth for Libraries provided by Innovative Interfaces. Joe Murphy, Innovative's Director of Library Futures, worked with librarians in exchanging ideas with SXSW attendees from all walks of technology life. He was joined by library advocates from the American Library Association, EveryLibrary, and passionate librarians from across the country. Here are a few of the powerful stories that emerged from librarians' engagement in the booth space in the center of the action in the SXSW exhibit hall.
Mel Gooch, Learning and Instruction Coordinator at San Francisco Public Library:
Nothing prepared us for the enthusiastic and welcoming reception we received from conference attendees at the Innovative Booth for Libraries. This presence was a game-changer for libraries. We got the word out to more people and engaged in lengthier and more meaningful conversations. For the first time in our many years of advocacy and outreach efforts people were able to approach us and begin the conversation.
Stacie Ledden, Communications Director at AnyThink:
Beyond the gadgets, apps and mind-blowing new ideas at SXSW, the most powerful take-away from this year's festival was collaborative impact. Our most effective tool was the conversation—one-on-one advocacy with tech leaders, students, entrepreneurs, innovators, fellow librarians and even celebrities. The conversation went like this: Libraries and the tech industry are a perfect match. Libraries are now places that support creativity and content creation, the perfect location for prototyping and user testing new products. They provide the perfect space for co-working and collaboration. They are spaces that inspire ideas, creativity and innovation.
Christian Zabriskie, Senior Librarian at Queens Public Library, Founder & CEO, Urban Librarians Unite:
What fascinated me was how people responded to story time. Here we are in this incredibly sophisticated crowd who are at the epicenter of the creative universe and they will stop and hear a guy tell a story and walk away talking about libraries. Also, when I asked a guy on the trade floor, "Have you been to your local library?" He answered, "why would I do that, the place is full of drunks." I talked him around to getting a library card.
Aspen Walker, Branch Manager, Lone Tree & Castle Pines Libraries, Douglas County Libraries:
I was completely blown away by the enthusiastic response we received. I literally met only one naysayer, and hundreds of people who told me "I love my library!" I thought this experience might be all about pushing libraries, but honestly, many approached us and wanted to share their love of libraries. There was push and pull. My favorite story: a documentary filmmaker overheard a few of us talking libraries with some other attendees, and approached, to ask for a library tattoo. We chatted for a while, and she felt called to offer to make a short film for us, and post it to YouTube so we can share it. Right in that moment, we went out on the convention center balcony to share our library love stories on camera. I can't wait to see SXSWLAM: the movie.
Carson Block, President, Carson Block Consulting Inc.:
When Neil Young takes a moment to be photographed holding up the library symbol after using the SXSW platform to launch his new high-quality music service, you know libraries are held in high esteem throughout our culture.
Librarians used the Innovative Booth for Libraries to insert libraries into conversations attendees had at the event, technology players took notice of the value that libraries bring, and facilitated those powerful conversations.
Response to Innovative's presence and librarians' advocacy was very positive as many in the library industry realized how successful librarians can be and how serious the company is about keeping libraries a vibrant participant in technology communities. Visitors to the Innovative Booth for Libraries were encouraged to "tweet to" their local libraries to say hello, good job, see you soon, and many did so!
Joe Murphy, Director of Library Futures at Innovative was a dynamic presence at the booth. "The true value of the synergy between librarians and other SXSW attendees can be easily seen in the stories we collected. Libraries are seen as a connector and a player thanks to the hard work of the passionate librarians at SXSW. I and Innovative are thrilled to help this type of magic happen."
