Pemberton (B.C.) Public Library Goes Live with Evergreen

Norcross, GA – July 22, 2008. Pemberton Public Library in British Columbia has become the 7th library in the BC SITKA consortium to go live with Evergreen, the consortial-quality open-source library automation software. Equinox Software Inc., the support and development company for Evergreen, provided assistance to SITKA’s migration team, who again led the way to another successful Evergreen migration. Pemberton Public Library’s new online catalogue can be viewed at http://pemberton.catalogue.bclibrary.ca/

Sharon Herbert, Project Manager for the Evergreen implementation project at BC SITKA, said, "British Columbia's strategic plan for libraries includes the goals of facilitating equitable access to information and encouraging collaboration and partnerships to improve service delivery in a cost-effective manner. Evergreen provides a solid foundation for us to achieve both of these goals."

Pemberton Public Library’s migration to Evergreen is one more step in a process that will see eighteen SITKA libraries running Evergreen by the end of 2008. Two pilot libraries in SITKA migrated in 2007, and sixteen will migrate this year. Evergreen is now running in nearly three hundred library outlets worldwide (over two hundred and seventy of these outlets are in the PINES lending consortium of the Georgia Public Library Service).

"The Pemberton migration is a microcosm of the intellectual market share that open-source software now has in the library world," said Brad LaJeunesse, Equinox president. He added, "Evergreen got its start in a library, and that’s reflected in its flexibility, strength, and core functionality. The news is out. Pemberton is just one of thirty migrations we’re doing in 2008."

Other SITKA consortium libraries now running Evergreen are Prince Rupert, Powell River, Fort Nelson, Terrace, Whistler, and Houston Public Libraries. The SITKA consortium has elected a gradual approach to moving libraries over to Evergreen; libraries "opt-in" on their own schedule. Many more libraries are anticipated to join over the next several years when their existing automation vendor contracts expire.

Pemberton Public Library was named for Joseph Despard Pemberton. In the 1850’s Pemberton was a surveyor–general for the Hudson’s Bay Company and supervised the building of British Columbia’s first legislative building. In 2006 the library circulated 43,209 items and had 5,239 registered users.

About Evergreen

Evergreen is consortial-quality, open-source library system software. Evergreen was initially developed to support PINES, a consortium of over 275 public libraries. While Evergreen has been designed from the ground up to meet the needs of very large, high-transaction, multi-site consortia, its robust, fault-tolerant architecture elegantly scales down to the smallest sites. Evergreen is also adaptive software that due to its service-oriented, standards-compliant design can nimbly evolve to meet changing library needs and user expectations.

From its debut in September 2006, Evergreen has consistently outperformed expectations and resulted in acclaim and praise from users worldwide. Evergreen has received significant attention, including a Technology Collaboration Award and grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Additional Evergreen implementations include the SITKA consortium in British Columbia, Canada, and new implementations planned for the Michigan Library Consortium as well as libraries in Indiana. About Equinox Software, Inc.

Founded by the original Evergreen designers and developers, Equinox Software is a growing team of skilled developers and other professionals who provide soup-to-nuts support for Evergreen, the consortial-quality, open source Integrated Library System (ILS). Equinox develops, supports, trains, migrates, integrates, and consults on Evergreen, and engages with the rapidly expanding Evergreen community. Instead of one-size-fits-all support, Equinox works closely with libraries to ensure Evergreen is implemented in the manner that best fits their individual needs.

In addition to support, custom development and integration services, Equinox offers complete Evergreen hosting packages for libraries wishing to outsource their ILS infrastructure. Equinox also provides consulting services for libraries seeking more insight into the value proposition of open source software.
