Other Info: SMART (Sharing and Managing a Region Together) is Australasia's only tertiary + public library collaboration. SMART Shared Services incorporates the libraries of Masterton District, Hutt City, Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec), Whitireia NZ, Porirua City and Kapiti District. Together the libraries serve over 230,000 people and provide access to more than 1/2 million library items. A regional SMART library card allows customers to use any of the 22 libraries; they can reserve items free of charge, pickup and drop off items at any library in SMART - also free of charge. The libraries operate a merged bibliographic database while maintaining independence of policies as appropriate for the individual entities. Behind the scenes SMART libraries are working to develop a new way of delivering library services. To date the group have achieved a region-wide troubleshooting process, a number of consortia purchases and regional bibliographic and serials standards to ensure all libraries adding to the shared database can do so effectively. Additonally, SMART is developing collaborative purchasing and processing, centres of excellence, partnerships with other library sectors and organisations.
