Other Info: When Dumbarton Oaks was acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Bliss in 1920, they collected books concerning their art objects, forming the nucleus of the present Byzantine Library. The library had its formal beginning in 1936, with the establishment of a reference collection in support of research in Byzantine and medieval studies. By 1940, when the Blisses conveyed Dumbarton Oaks to Harvard University, the library had some 14,000 volumes, including many important works on Byzantine art and archaeology, museum catalogs, illustrative materials on manuscripts, painting, mosaics, sculpture, and the decorative arts, and the principal learned periodicals in art and archaeology. The library collection subsequently has grown to more than 123,000 volumes. Some 900 journals are currently received. The library also includes microfilms, microfiches, maps, and a computerized offprint file.
