Other Info: The Tolstoy Library was founded in Munich in 1949 by Russian emigrants with the support of the American Tolstoy Foundation. It is an independent, non-commercial institution for the promotion, preservation and communication of Russian culture in Germany. It has no political objectives. With more than 46,000 works, it is the largest non-governmental Russian-language library in Western Europe. The Tolstoy Library enables Russian-speaking immigrants to preserve and pass on their culture of origin. At the same time, it is open to anyone interested in Russian language and culture. As a mediator between cultures, the Tolstoy Library thus fulfils an important bridging function between Russians and Germans. The library is run by Tolstoi Hilfs- und Kulturwerk e.V.
