Alberta Law Society Libraries choose Voyager

Press Release: Endeavor Information Systems, Inc. [May 17, 2002]

DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, May 17, 2002: Endeavor Information Systems announced today the Alberta Law Society Libraries, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, will employ the Voyager integrated library management system to replace their current VTLS system. Voyager will be installed in 56 law libraries throughout Alberta that serve the bar, judiciary and general public.

Mona Pearce, Senior Manager for the Alberta Law Society Libraries, explained that one of the objectives of the libraries' recently completed strategic plan is to develop the "virtual library" as a concept of information which is housed digitally and deliverable without regard to its location or the time of day. In this regard, the libraries were looking for a system with new technology, attention to security for sensitive data, patron-friendly features, and manageability for the Libraries' staff.

"We appreciate the flexibility of the Voyager system, so we can do what we want with the data in Voyager," Pearce stated. "We noticed Voyager is written with entirely new code and is not a system built on old legacy code. Voyager's Oracle base was also important—Oracle is the relational database system that is accepted worldwide, so we really wanted to employ an Oracle-based system."

Along with Voyager's base development, Pearce explained the libraries were interested in the security of Voyager's new circulation clusters, which allow the Libraries to manage policy control for different groups. Available in the 2001.2 release, Voyager's circulation clusters allow each patron group to use different circulation policies or share universal circulation policies, such as routing and requesting between different circulation units.

Pearce explained before searching for a new system, the library surveyed their clientele to determine how library technology should assist the researchers. She explained the research determined that patrons look for many self-service options like checking on the status of materials, online renewal of items, electronic reference and document delivery. Voyager will assist the Alberta Law Society Libraries in reaching these goals with clear patron access to information, instant delivery of content with real time status updates and options for the integration of many different file types into the catalog.

Voyager also allows the Libraries to customize their presentation options in the OPAC, manipulate data for local reports and notices, plus modify the system to match local workflows and customizations. "Voyager allows for so much adaptability and flexibility," Pearce said. "We can manage the database ourselves, which really allows us to take ownership."

"The Alberta Law Society Libraries understand the importance of flexibility and new technology in an integrated library management system," stated Jane Burke, Endeavor's President and CEO. "For almost eight years, Endeavor has been working with academic and research libraries around the globe to design and augment Voyager, an open, advanced library management system that still allows clear manageability, regardless of type and size of library."
