DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, Oct. 10, 2001: Endeavor Information Systems announced today the Cal West Library Consortium, headquartered in Fullerton, CA, has selected the Universal Borrowing intra-consortia lending system. Through Universal Borrowing, more than 100,000 students at Cal West's five libraries, Cypress College, Fullerton College, Golden West College, Orange Coast College and the virtual library of Coastline Community College, will have reciprocal borrowing privileges for over 350,000 volumes.
Universal Borrowing offers superior solutions for shared circulation between libraries that employ the Voyager integrated library management system. Requesting and circulating materials in a cooperative borrowing environment is fast and simple, with patron-initiated requests and direct, unmediated reciprocal borrowing.
Universal Borrowing will save the Cal West Libraries' staff and researchers time. “Staff will not have to create a new library card and students won't have to wait for a new card—they can use their student ID card from any of the five campuses at any library. Universal Borrowing will make it easier for students to visit any library for materials,” said Monica Doman, Systems and Cataloging Librarian for the Cypress College Library. “Information will also be more accurate—there won't be any re-input of data and the circulation staff can block students with fines from other libraries.”
She explained that a cooperative mission among all of California's community colleges could encourage future reciprocal borrowing between all of the libraries in Orange County, the region, or the state.
“Endeavor is the only ILS vendor with this reciprocal borrowing capability—library-defined policies, patron-initiated requests, unlimited options for system-wide policies, and flexible options that can change with the consortium,” stated Verne Coppi, Endeavor's Vice-President of Development. “Universal Borrowing is a monumental achievement and an exciting product that takes Resource Sharing to the next level.”
About Universal Borrowing
Universal Borrowing provides unmediated interlibrary loan borrowing among different libraries that use the Voyager system. Real-time status checks and online patron and item updates ensure each institution may define its own levels for thresholds and circulation policy enforcement. With Universal Borrowing, researchers may place requests on items in the cooperative libraries, designate a pick up location that is either their home library or elsewhere, and return the items to any library in the cooperative. Researchers may also complete in-person cooperative borrowing requests. Universal Borrowing provides complete tracking of the item, borrower, and return information for payment of fines and fees.
