Brigham Young University enhances online library with SIRSI's iLink

Press Release: SIRSI Corporation [October 16, 2001]

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Oct. 16, 2001) Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library recently introduced its new, research-centered online library using SIRSI's iLink Online Scholar's Portal. According to Martin Raish, coordinator for library instruction and information literacy, SIRSI's iLink, in conjunction with the redesigned library Web site, has enabled the library to provide students, faculty, and other researchers with unparalleled access to multiple electronic resources through a single, easy-to-use interface.

“More than a year ago, a library team began looking at ways to make it easier for users to search library resources. In particular, we wanted to provide a single location from which users could conduct searches for specific materials, such as journals, article indexes, sound recordings, and digital images. With iLink, users can conduct searches from the top level of our Web site, rather than having to ‘drill down' to an online catalog. A professional Web designer gave the new site the custom look we wanted, and iLink enabled BYU's library information systems manager to create custom searches that help users quickly locate very specific types of materials,” Raish commented.

Introduced at the beginning of fall 2001 semester, the new online library ( features a notebook design, with tabs designating the different types of materials available for searching, as well as links to course reserve materials, BYU digital collections, other libraries' catalogs, Web search engines, and library services and information. In addition, many online bibliographic records include cover art, tables of contents, and other detailed information—features that have received many positive user comments, Raish said. Users may also create personalized accounts to be notified by email of new materials in specified subjects of interest.
