Abstract: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kharagpur was established in 1950 as one of six IITs to train the necessary manpower to act as leaders in technology innovation to enhance the country''s techno-economic strength and self-reliance. IIT Kharagpur has special Central Library facilities with a massive collection of documents, specifically in science and technology. The 1990s saw a turning point in conventional library services worldwide as the base mode of library operations moved towards electronic information handling. Establishing an electronic library is an appropriate solution in India, as in the rest of the world, to the challenges facing librarians in overcoming inadequate space, locational disadvantages and the timelag in information processing. The IIT in Kharagpur started to establish an electronic library in 1995 by making various online database services and video library facilities available to its users. By computerising its library operations and developing the facility for browsing the OPAC, the Central Library has redefined the service standards for its user community.
