Calvin Collection To Go Online with SIRSI's Hyperion

Press Release: Sirsi Corporation [August 25, 2000]

Huntsville, Ala. (Aug. 25, 2000) The Hekman Library of Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary, which serves faculty, staff and students of both institutions and the surrounding community of Grand Rapids, Mich., has selected Sirsi Corporation's Unicorn Library Management System and Hyperion Digital Archive System to provide state-of-the-art automation for public and staff services. The library is migrating to SIRSI from a Dynix Classic system.

Library Director Glenn Remelts reported, "We were impressed with SIRSI's longevity as a company, as well as with the fact that Unicorn has always been client/server and its users have never had to switch platforms. It was important to us to have the flexibility that client/server architecture provides. But Hyperion is what really tipped the scales in SIRSI's favor. Our institutional strength is the study of John Calvin and Calvinism, and we have a large collection of Calvin's books and writings, including many first editions. Through Hyperion, we will be able to make digital versions of these documents available to researchers online, giving scholars greater access to these unique resources."

Named after the 16th century religious reformer, Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary maintain the largest scholarly collection on John Calvin in the Americas. In addition to this collection, the Hekman Library has approximately 500,000 items and provides students and faculty with access to more than 100 electronic databases and a liaison program that matches researchers with reference librarians who specialize in their subject areas.

SIRSI, the leader in library technology, is a privately held company founded in 1979, with headquarters in Huntsville, Ala. SIRSI uses the most advanced technology available to provide easy-to-use information systems for libraries, businesses and archives. With offices in major U.S. cities and subsidiaries in Australia, Canada, Latin America, the Middle East, the Peoples Republic of China and the United Kingdom, the company has established its Unicorn products as the leading client/server library information systems in the world.
