St. Louis, MO -- Data Research Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ: DRAI) today announced its intent to expand its workstation offerings to include support of the Windows NT operating system from Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT). Support of the Windows NT operating system expands Data Research's existing development plan for workstation products, which had already included the support of Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) workstations running both the Open VMS operating system and the OSF/1 operating system, as well as workstations from Sun Microsystems, Inc., International Business Machines Corporation and Hewlett-Packard Company running versions of the UNIX operating system.
The addition of Windows NT means that Data Research workstations, designed to operate in a client/server relationship with Data Research databases and other remote databases, will have the capacity to support both the easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) and the internal support of multilingual interfaces inherent to Windows NT. Client software modules running under Windows NT also provide Data Research with the opportunity to expand its hardware offerings to include hardware based on high-end Intel chips.

Data Research has a long-standing relationship with Digital in supplying the processors for Data Research's fully integrated automation systems for libraries. With the emergence of distributed processing and stand-alone workstations for library automation, Data Research has been able to expand its development efforts to include other workstation providers in addition to Digital, while still maintaining its strong relationship with Digital for full-scale library systems.
Mellinger added that he expected the Data Research workstation product for Windows NT to be available in late 1993 or early 1994.
