Some 23 states have now passed computer crime laws. The states which first passed such legislation made it a crime to access a computer and maliciously damage data, commit fraud or acquire confidential credit information. The more recent legislation is broader and makes it illegal to attempt to gain unauthorized access to a computer for any reason. Librarians in the following states may wish to inform themselves of the laws which apply in their cases: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
