Quarton leaves Ameritech

Library Systems Newsletter [August 1996]

Ameritech Library Services has named an interim team to head the company while it searches for a replacement for President Tom Quarton, who resigned on July 30th. The team consists of Roger Sloan, Paul Sybrowsky, and Cathleen Asch.

Roger Sloan, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer since September, 1994, has been designated interim Chief Operating Officer until a replacement for Quarton is found. Sloan is a Certified Public Accountant and was Manager of Strategic Planning at Ameritech Corporation before coming to Ameritech Library Services.

Paul Sybrowski, Chairman of Ameritech Library Services and best known to the library community because he was a co-founder of Dynix in 1983 and President until its sale to Ameritech, is committing nearly full-time to Ameritech Library Services for the next several months. His key area of concentration will be strategy development and key customer relations.

Cathleen Asch, President of Electronic Commerce for Ameritech Corporation, the business unit within which Ameritech Library Services fits, has the responsibility for overseeing Ameritech's electronic commerce initiatives in the library, healthcare, government, manufacturing, and financial industries. Asch was a co-founder and President of Truevision, Inc., an AT&T spin off that is a leader in computer video graphics. In an earlier assignment she was the Manager of New Business Development at McGraw-Hill Information Services.

The departure of Tom Quarton comes on the heels of the departure of Art Brady, Vice President of Sales. However, the other eight vice presidential slots remain unchanged.

These two major resignations do not appear to signal a loss of interest in the library market by Ameritech Corporation. Ameritech Library Services was prominently featured in Ameritech Corporation's 1995 Annual Report, unusual for a business unit generating only one percent of the parent company's revenues. The parent company also contributed $2 million to the National Digital Library earlier this year. Ameritech Corporation has also recently begun exploiting the synergy between Ameritech Library Services and its other business units, especially those which deal with network services.
