British Institute of Radiology Library launches Web-based catalogue

Press Release: epixtech, inc. [May 2000]

London, England. The British Institute of Radiology's (BIR) unique catalogue will very soon be available for the first time on the Internet. Staff at the BIR are currently working to improve and standardize the existing catalogue before making it available to Internet users. This will enable the library's collection of both books and journals to be accessible online, which will particularly benefit those living outside London or abroad who are unable to visit the library in person. The BIR purchased the Horizon PAC and Web PAC modules from epixtech (formerly Ameritech Library Services) in order to create the catalogue and provide a Web interface to its users.

According to Kate Sanders, Library and Information Systems Manager for the BIR, "In choosing a system, we looked for ease of use for readers, flexibility (especially for later years) and a competitive price, since money for the new system was raised by donations. The epixtech Horizon system was chosen because it most closely matched these criteria, was suitable for a small, specialist library and did not necessitate the purchase of all the modules offered by the company.

"We found epixtech personnel to be friendly and helpful, giving us the necessary time from when the system was originally chosen until it was installed to raise the necessary money. We also preferred the design of epixtech's catalogue module and its Web page template to those of other library automation companies."

About the British Institute of Radiology

The British Institute of Radiology is the oldest multidisciplinary society in the world. It provides a forum for medical, scientific, industrial, commercial and other allied professionals. The activities of the BIR include a library and information service as well as publishing, scientific meetings and technical exhibitions. The BIR Library and Information Service is currently housed in the Bernard Sunley Library at 36 Portland Place in central London. It has a unique archive and historical collection and an extensive collection of books and journals, some of which date back to the discovery of X-rays in 1895. The library operates a reference-only service that ensures visitors always have access to the required texts. It also offers an inquiry service, providing information on request in the form of photocopies from books and journals or literature searches.
