Anchorage Public Library contracts with DRA

Press Release: Data Research Associates, Inc. [November 2, 1995]

St. Louis, Missouri, USA -- November 2, 1995: Data Research Associates Inc. (DRA) announced today that Anchorage Municipal Libraries had selected a Data Research System to upgrade its library automation system. Converting from a Geac system, the library is replacing all of its character-cell terminals with PC-based workstations for its staff and borrowers.

The Anchorage Municipal Libraries system is the largest public library system in Alaska, and also represents the first library in the state to become a DRA customer. Z. J. Loussac -- the headquarters library -- and five branches serve a population of approximately 240,000 individuals spread across a 75-mile radius with a wide range of services. In many ways, the library service reflects the unique culture that exists in Anchorage and the surrounding area. For example, it offers the most complete special collection of Alaskana materials available in a public library, serves as the state's only patent and trademark depository, and is helping to increase access to remote materials via SLED (Statewide Library Electronic Doorway), which provides access to selected Internet resources. (SLED is funded by the Alaska State Library and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.)

With its new Data Research System, such access should become even greater. Fifty-two personal computers will be available to visitors of the library, as well as dial-in access for those users who remain at home. The library will be installing DRA's Telephone Renewal and Notification system, and Z39.50-compliant client/server software.

"We selected DRA because we were pleased with the functionality of the system," says Mary "Moe" McGee, Municipal Librarian. "With its emphasis on telecommunications and standards adherence, our relatively remote community can have access to a world of information. For 1996, we anticipate a major educational campaign and celebration, including training sessions and other activities to introduce the new system."
