St. Louis, Missouri, USA -- October 14, 1994: Data Research Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ: DRAI) today announced that it had completed its purchase of the library automation system and related assets of multiLIS, a division of Sobeco Ernst & Young, Inc.; certain assets of multiLIS distributors Avec Technical Services, Inc. and multiLIS Corporation; and the stock of Multicore Library Services, Inc. and multiLIS Europe S.A. The purchase was transacted for approximately CAN$2.6 million (US$1.9 million) in cash and assumption of certain liabilities of the selling parties.
With the purchase, Data Research assumes support and enhancement of the multiLIS system for more than 300 libraries in the United States, Canada, South America and Europe. Madeleine Balcer, formerly director of the multiLIS division of Sobeco Ernst & Young, was appointed president and chief executive officer of a newly formed Montreal-based subsidiary of Data Research.
In addition to the expansion of Data Research's customer base and a presence in Europe, the multiLIS acquisition provides Data Research with additional product offerings for school (K-12) libraries and for customers who desire a UNIX-based automation product.
