Auto-Graphics names national sales manager to join library business expansion initiative

Press Release: Auto-Graphics, Inc. [June 9, 1998]

POMONA, Calif., June 9, 1998 -- Auto-Graphics Inc. today announced the appointment of a national sales manager with broad experience in integrated library systems and online catalog services to help expand the company's position as a pioneer in Web-based resource sharing for library consortia.

David W. Bates brings to his new position more than 20 years of applicable experience on both the vendor and client sides. He was most recently national sales director at Ameritech Library Services, a major vendor of library automation systems. Earlier, he was a marketing representative at OCLC Inc., the largest provider of online cataloging services in the U.S., where his territory consisted of 14 states and all federal libraries.

Bates began his career as director of the North Adams Public Library in Mass. following graduation from the University of South Florida with a master's degree in Library Science. In 1980, he moved to the Western Massachusetts Regional Library System as regional services coordinator responsible for interlibrary loan coordination, consulting services to 110 member libraries and implementation of an automated library system.

Bates' selection coincides with a major initiative at Auto-Graphics to market high-end catalog services based on capabilities acquired in 1997 from Canada's largest provider of online bibliographic information, according to William Kliss, chief operating officer. "Auto-Graphics today is North America's largest for-profit vendor of online database services to libraries, and we are just beginning to penetrate the U.S. market for high-end academic and specialized institutions," he said.

Meanwhile, the company continues to maintain a leadership position in Web-based catalog and interlibrary loan services to public and K-12 school libraries, Kliss added.
