POMONA, Calif., June 26, 1998 -- Auto-Graphics Inc. today announced a platform-independent interlibrary loan (ILL) administration capability for its Impact/ONLINE customers, who can now use any web browser to track patron requests made through associated online services.
Previously available only for Windows PC users, Impact/ONLINE ILL resources are now equally accessible from Apple Macintosh and any other browser-equipped platform. With today's announcement, Auto-Graphics has completed the migration of all Windows client applications within the Impact/ONLINE suite to a web server.
"Many of our library consortia customers, particularly schools, have a large number of Macintosh systems, and the new browser-based ILL service should accelerate their joining the online movement," said William Kliss, chief operating officer at Auto-Graphics.
There are long-term benefits to all customers, Kliss noted. There is no longer a need for each customer to install software upgrades, and the entire process of continuously improving functionality of Impact/ONLINE software has been enhanced.
An Auto-Graphics service introduced in 1995, called Impact/ONLINE WebPAC, made it possible for library patrons to use an in-library or their personal browser to search a consortia catalog and initiate an interlibrary loan request when necessary. ILL administrative functions by library staff that may now be conducted with the same simplicity include: patron request approval, tracking request status, maintaining lists of participating libraries and their standard practices, enabling/disabling automatic approval of patron requests, and prioritizing the order of libraries to receive a request. The application also provides standard reports on ILL activities.
"From a librarian's perspective, all of the functionality of the PC-resident ILL module is retained, but the workflow is far more streamlined," Kliss said.
