Carl Systems renamed CARL Corporation

Press Release: Carl Corporation [December 17, 1993]

DENVER -- Denver-based CARL Systems, Inc. has changed its company name to CARL Corporation to better reflect the diverse products and services now being offered.

CARL Corporation was established in 1988 as CARL Systems, Inc. to market and support the library management system developed by the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries (CARL). The Alliance, a Colorado nonprofit organization, had conceived the CARL library system to promote the sharing of research in Colorado.

"The name change clarifies the distinction between the company and our main product line, the CARL System," said Becky Lenzini, president of CARL Corporation.

CARL Corporation, a privately-held company, has gone on to market the library system, the CARL System, to more than 420 libraries nationwide. The CARL System provides a seamless network of library resources reaching from Hawaii to Boston and the East Coast.

The company has also developed new graphic interfaces for the library system, starting with introduction of the Kid's Catalog in June 1993. Developed in cooperation with the Denver Public Library and Apple Computer, Inc, the Kid's Catalog offers children an easy way to find library materials by clicking on colorful, graphic pictures. The Kid's Catalog is a navigating tool that removes barriers and opens doorways to information for children. It is already installed at more than 13 library systems nationwide including the Denver Public Library, Los Angeles Public Library and Atlanta-Fulton Public Libraries, and was recently featured on CNN television. A version of the Kid's Catalog, designed especially for adults, is underway and scheduled for release in mid 1994.

"With the growth of the information highway and the massive amount of information available -- our graphic interfaces and services will become even more important," added Lenzini.

During the past year, CARL Corporation also entered into partnership with The Blackwell Group of Oxford, England, to expand The UnCover Company, an online periodical article delivery service. UnCover, which CARL first started in 1989, is now the largest article database in the world, providing open access to more than 5 million articles in 15,000 journals worldwide.

CARL Corporation currently employs 63 people, along with another 55 through The UnCover Company. CARL Corporation is located at 3801 East Florida Avenue, Suite 300, Denver, CO 80210, phone (303) 758-3030.
