(Carlsbad, CA -- July 25,1994) -- Data Trek, Inc. and UMI have signed an agreement to significantly expand the accessibility of UMI's ABI/INFORM database for businesses worldwide.
"This joint venture will create a new, powerful and affordable way for users to access more than 1,000 business and management publications," CEO Scot Cheatham said. 'Data Trek, Inc.'s use of Windows technology makes online searching of UMI files even easier, he continued.
UMI will make ABI/INFORM available to Data Trek, Inc. software users, and accessible via Data Trek, Inc.'s award-winning GoPAC (Graphical Online Public Access Catalog) software starting later this Winter. This Microsoft Windows software, winner of the 1993 Meckler Award for "Most Innovative Product," allows users to search ABI/INFORM records on their PC-based networks.
The Data Trek, Inc./UMI alliance allows PC network users to take advantage of UMI's ABI/INFORM product and load, search and retrieve information on their computer network locally using Data Trek, Inc.'s GoPAC product Data Trek, Inc. will design a specific add-on data processing utility for users who receive UMI data in a MARC font.
As the first Windows-compatible OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) on the market, GoPAC is designed to bring Windows technology to online catalogs. Its straightforward screens, point-and-click searching, "Start Over" functions, and full MARC compatibility accommodate both novice and expert users. GoPAC offers index searching, keyword searching, complete Boolean capabilities, truncated searches, and HyperSearch" - spontaneous searching of any word from within a retrieved record.
ABI/INFORM is the premier database of business information containing more than 500,000 abstracts, which cover approximately 1,000 business and management journals. Records include titles, authors, journal names and codes, ISSNs, publication dates, classification codes, descriptors, company names, D-U-N-S numbers, and informative abstracts. ABI/INFORM coverage begins with 1985 material, and backfiles are available for the years 1971 through 1984. The database size is approximately 65 to 95 Mb, per year.
Data Trek, Inc. will be demonstrating the award-winning GoPAC at upcoming library conferences in which a coupon for a free 'Sampler," offering a guided tour through the GoPAC software, will be available.
