76 public schools in Indianapolis, Indiana to be automated with SIRS Mandarin M3

Press Release: SIRS, Inc. [October 27, 1999]

SIRS Mandarin, Inc. announces that 76 public schools in Indianapolis, Indiana will be automating their library collections with the SIRS Mandarin M3 Library Automation System.

SIRS Mandarin was selected the library automation vendor of choice by the Indianapolis Public School District, which serves more than 45,000 students. The contract includes the M3 networkable Core Package, district-wide Internet access and training. The school district also plans to convert approximately half a million records contained in its district-wide union file using SIRS Mandarinšs retrospective conversion services.

"The Indianapolis Public School District is excited about converting our media centers to the M3 system. It will increase and improve our opportunities to service and assist our students, staff and community using state-of-the-art software," stated Donna Smith, Program Coordinator of the Indianapolis Public School District media centers.

A selection committee composed of high school media directors, elementary and middle school media specialists, the district technical services and instructional media reviewed automation software from seven companies before choosing M3. "We tried not only to find the latest features on the market," explained Smith, "but also features which were unique to the needs of Indianapolis public schools."

M3's report generator, circulation and bookbag features and its multilingual OPAC were among some of the features praised by the selection committee. According to Smith, the committee "was pleased with the multiple interfaces, which will accommodate all levels of patrons within the district and can be adapted to school and district-wide needs, including equipment inventory and fixed assets."

The Indianapolis Public School District has also purchased SIRS Mandarin M3 Web Gateways, enabling the school system to place its collection on the Internet. "Our district-wide technology plan includes servicing students as well as the community through technology, and M3's Web Gateway offers that opportunity to the Indianapolis community," Smith said.

Operational with Windows 95, 98 and NT platforms, M3 includes a proprietary full MARC record search engine, networkable software with unlimited site licensing, Windows functionality and configurable circulation and cataloging features.
