Ameritech hosts Readers' Choice Awards luncheon

Press Release: Ameritech Library Services [September 23, 1999]

CHICAGO - It's the Oscar of the literary community. The Readers' Choice Awards honor authors who were selected by library users across the nation. Readers were asked by Friends of Libraries U.S.A (FOLUSA) to vote for their favorite, 1998-published book in seven categories.

The ballots were tabulated by FOLUSA, and the winning authors and their books are:

Author Category Book Title

Wally Lamb fiction "I Know This Much is True"

Bill Bryson nonfiction "A Walk in the Woods"

Christopher Reeve biography "Still Me"

Sue Grafton mystery-thriller "N Is for Noose"

Danielle Steel romance "The Long Road Home"

Mary Doris Russell science fiction "Children of God"

Cassandra Danz self-help "Mrs. Greenthumbs Plows Ahead"

New York's Blackbird Restaurant was the setting today for a luncheon hosted by Ameritech, where the winning authors received $1,000 and an etched, crystal loving cup trophy.

"Run, don't walk to your local library and check out these Readers' Choice books," said Lana Porter, president of Ameritech Library Services. "Ameritech is privileged to join FOLUSA as we recognize such esteemed writers."

Ballots for next year's Readers' Choice Awards are available at public libraries or online at www.folusa.com. The deadline for voting for your favorite authors of 1999 is Dec. 1, 1999.
