Atlantis Srl, the sole Ex Libris distributor in Italy, is happy to announce that a new island has been added to the map of ALEPH installations. Today Sardinia`s University of Sassari, along with the Public Library of Sassari, signed a contract for the installation of the latest version of ALEPH 500 and has thus become the 22nd Italian ALEPH site.
The University of Sassari, established in the sixteenth century, is one of two major academic institutions on Sardinia. The university comprises 10 faculties (humanities, law, economics, medicine, and natural sciences, among others) and serves a population of some 15,000 students.
ALEPH 500 will be installed on a central RISC ORACLE SMP server to manage a total of 15 libraries, nine at the departmental level and six at the faculty level, and a database of approximately 350,000 volumes. Initially, the system will host 27 full users and 31 Web OPAC users. It is scheduled to go live in the summer of 2000.
Asked about the reasons for choosing Aleph 500, Dr. Elisabetta Pilia, head of Library Coordination, noted, "We identified ALEPH 500 as the system best capable of ensuring a new quality of interlibrary cooperation at our university and supporting an urban and inter-university consortium."
Prof. Giuseppe Suffritti, director of the University Computer Center, adds, "We were looking for a new-generation, future-oriented library automation system, and ALEPH 500, with its rich functionality and its leading market position in the academic sector, best fulfills these criteria."
Atlantis Srl of Verona will be responsible for project management, system installation, migration of records from the library`s TinLib system, staff training, and first-line support.
