Blackwell North America, a supplier of books and bibliographic support products to libraries throughout the world, recently selected Micro-VTLS for a specific application after testing seven leading software products. "We chose Micro-VTLS based on its ability to handle high volume activity in a networked, multi-user environment," says Allan Graham, Director, Technical Services Marketing and Development for Blackwell. "We were also extremely pleased to discover that following the purchase VTLS provides terrific service and support."
Blackwell's MARC editors are using Micro-VTLS on a local area network to upgrade Cataloging In Publication (CIP) records downloaded from LC-MARC files residing on their mainframe. The records are upgraded with book-in-hand and supplied to Blackwell's customers through the MARC-With-Books program as part of a new service aimed at providing full "catalog-ready" MARC records with each book shipment. The new service has successfully completed its test phase and is now in full production, providing weekly records to a number of Blackwell's academic library customers.
Graham states that Blackwell liked Micro-VTLS because of the ease and flexibility of its import and export functions. "Micro-VTLS preserves the integrity of the full MARC format from import to export," he states, "and provides a full function editor, allowing editing of all fields, subfields, indicators, and fixed-length control fields as well as the ability to override all defaults. We found the software to be very reasonably priced for the extent of its functionality."
