Huntsville, AL (March 27, 1997) - Sirsi Corporation announced today the license of UNICORN to East Central Community College (ECCC) located in Decatur, Mississippi.
East Central Community College first opened its doors in 1928 with a freshman class of twenty students. Since that time, the college has grown to encompass a five-county district and over 1,800 students. East Central believes its purpose is to provide both instruction and service to students. ECCC fulfills its instructional goals with a commitment to opportunities for mental, physical, and emotional development. As a service agency, the College provides instructional programs applicable to life in a complex society.
SIRSI's Unicorn Collection Management System, using client/server technology, will be installed on an IBM RISC System/6000. Ann Burkes, Director of ECCC's Burton Library stated, "We selected Unicorn because of the level of satisfaction expressed by other SIRSI customers and the compatibility we will have with the other six Mississippi Community Colleges installing SIRSI systems." Unicorn's flexible UNIX base allows users to choose different platforms, all of which operate with the same software. Its modular design enables users to build on the system's core Z39.50-compliant catalog, choosing and configuring additional modules according to local library needs.
The Burton Library, located near the center of campus, opened during the 1976-1977 school year. The library serves the students of ECCC with a facility that contains a large reading room, conference space, nine study rooms and a special collections room.. The library holds over 32,000 volumes some of which are included in various special collections.
