DRA announces network consulting service

Press Release: Data Research Associates, Inc. [June 5, 1996]

St. Louis, Missouri -- June 5, 1996: Data Research Associates Inc. (DRA) today announced availability of its Network Consulting service, to help libraries make networking decisions and plans that are best suited to their needs - before investing in new or upgraded networking hardware, software and services. As a leader in recognizing the significance of networking more than a decade ago, DRA is building its consulting service upon its extensive experience in helping libraries maximize resources via networking.

The basic-fee Network Consulting service includes a one-day, on-site visit or teleconference (at the customer's choice) with a DRA Networking Systems Engineer to determine the library's existing scenario and future objectives. The consultant then explains the local-area or wide-area network structures (LANs or WANs) that best suit the library's goals, describes how to upgrade from any existing networking and conducts a security audit for the library's system.

Following initial consultation, the library receives a written report summarizing the information discussed, outlining the library's options, and providing a DRA price quote to help with budgeting. The report is designed to be concise and useful to all staff members involved in the process, including both the technical details required by your systems staff and an easy-to-read overview required by management.

DRA's Network Consulting service is available for libraries using any of DRA's systems (DRA Classic, INLEX/3000 or MultiLIS) or using a different library system.

Pasco County Libraries System in Florida was one of the first customers to take advantage of DRA's consulting service. Linda Allen, Pasco's Assistant Libraries Director/Support Services says, "Rick [Cook, of DRA] did a fabulous job. He came in and spent a day talking with us about where we were, where we needed to be, and why. He also set up a pathway to achieve our plans, breaking it down into manageable steps.

"Rick was able to explain the value of networking both to our management and to our technical staff, so that everyone became enthusiastic about the project. He outlined all of our options and helped us evaluate how we wanted to implement them, with no high-pressure 'sell.'"

Allen notes that Pasco County libraries now are more than halfway done upgrading their network, based on the plans DRA helped them form. "Using DRA's consulting service was much easier and more effective than reading all the technical publications and going to all the seminars ... and coming out still not knowing for sure what we really should be doing here at our libraries. The service has worked extremely well for us."

DRA, headquartered in St. Louis, is a leading systems integrator for libraries and other information providers, offering its own proprietary information services software; third-party software and hardware; Internet, World Wide Web and other networking services; and other related support services.
