Carl adds database validation

Library Systems Newsletter [September 1999]

Libraries using CARL.web and CARL.Webcheck, a new CARL.web feature, can now authenticate patrons outside the library who want to access the commercial databases available through the automated library system. CARL. Webcheck allows remote patrons to enter validation information, such as a library card number or student ID number, for authorization to use the databases the library has licensed.

Web.check first looks at the user s I? address. If the IP address is within a pre-approved range-for example, workstations inside the library-access to the database will be permitted. If the IP address is not within the pre-approved range, the user is prompted to identify patron information. If the information is valid, the user is allowed to access the database. If the not, the user is presented with a library-customizable message.

Web.check will be available as part of an upcoming release of CARL.web after beta testing is completed.
