The big four dominate corporate PC market

Library Systems Newsletter [August 1999]

Four major PC manufacturers continue to dominate the corporate PC market, the market for sales to companies with at least 500 employees. Compaq continues to be the market leader with a 19.8 percent market share, but Dell is gaining ground and is now at 12.9 percent. It may pass IBM--currently at 14.8 percent--in the next year to take second place. Gateway is a distant fourth at 7 percent. The reason why three companies have almost half of the market is that they offer the best post-sale services and support. GartnerGroup, a market research firm, recently predicted that by 2002 the major suppliers of PCs will realize at least 40 percent of their revenue by providing computer services and technical support.
