Publishers cautious about e-books

Library Systems Newsletter [June 1999]

We recently contacted 50 publishers to determine whether they were planning on producing "e- books," electronic books which can be read online or downloaded, Only 10 percent are investigating the option, and none have begun to create one.

The only e-books we were able to identify were electronic editions of works previously published in print form and out-of-print, and a handful of new titles published by small newcomers such as Xlibris.com, Excel.com, and Books On-line.

While there may be great potential for e-books, that still appears to be in the indefinite future.
