In February, the International Telecommunications Union completed the technical specifications for a 56 Kbps modem and has been soliciting comments since then. Designated v.90, the final vote has been scheduled for September, 1998. Approval is expected since the major vendors now offering two different solutions have agreed to support the common standard. Vendors are already beginning to offer upgrades to current x2 and 56kFlex-based modems that will enable them to be v.90-compliant.
