The year-long battle over competing 56 Kbps modem technologies appears to be over. A compromise between the K56flex and x2 technologies was reached in a recent meeting of the International Telecommunications Union. Barring unexpected complications, a standard for 56 Kbps modems may be completed as early as the first quarter of 1998 and published in mid-1998.
