Ameritech Library Services, has introduced NetPublisher, a Microsoft Windows-based publishing tool for internal networks and the Internet. Available in early 1995, NetPublisher is a World Wide Web, Gopher, and a Z39.50 server that helps libraries catalog and organize resources of all media types including text, image, audio, video, and multimedia. The system features point-and-click cataloging for information such as annual reports, product brochures, sales presentations, customer support, and other useful data.
The server automatically formats resources for World Wide Web, Gopher, and Z39.50. Patrons can easily access these files by using a World Wide Web client (such as Mosaic), Gopher, or a Z39.50 client. Libraries can customize NetPublisher to utilize one, two or all three protocols. As patrons are more likely to use Mosaic or Gopher than a Z39.50 client, NetPublisher was developed to support all three modes.
NetPublisher's searchable information database can be fully integrated with OPACs (Ameritech Library Services' or other vendor's systems). Additionally, it can stand alone as its own database.
Hardware requirements include Windows NT 3.1 or higher, 486 PC or higher, 24MB RAM, 10MB disk space and a dedicated Internet hookup. Editor requirements include Windows 3.1 or higher, 386 PC or higher, 8MB RAM, and 4MB disk space. A variety of packaging and pricing options is available.
