Data Research announces Z39.50 access to IAC, UMI database

Library Systems Newsletter [September 1993]

Data Research Associates (DRA) has announced the availability of Z39.50 access to database products from Information Access Company (IAC) and University Microfilms International (UMI). Any library with Z39.50-compliant client software--including libraries serviced by vendors other than DRA-can provide transparent access to a selection of databases from IAC and UMI using the familiar screens and commands of the library's host system.

By completing the standard online subscription arrangement with the database provider, the client library can provide its patrons with unlimited access to the desired database(s) by purchasing an Open DRANET subscription along with a subscription to each desired database. Non-DRA libraries can access the service via the Internet or by purchasing a dedicated Open DRANET telecommunications connection.

In addition to providing a single, familiar point of access to diverse databases, the Z39.50 access has eliminated the need for local libraries to load, maintain and update periodical indexes onsite. The databases offered via network access by DRA are currently updated weekly and will be updated daily in the near future. For libraries with current access to the Internet, Z39.50 access to the databases is available on a 30-day free trial basis.
