Data General, the company which supplies OCLC Local Systems with CPUs, has announced a new machine at the top end of its Eclipse MV/Family. The new 32 bit supermini is designated the MV/40000. Depending on the application, it can support up to 1024 terminals. While OCLC has not yet announced benchmark results, it is possible that a system configured around the new machine could support over 400 terminals. That would enable OCLC Local Systems the opportunity to bid much larger systems than has been possible with Data General's MV/20000. Prices for the new CPUs will start at $500,000.
