With beta testing in progress at sixteen sites, the Library of Congress Cataloging Distribution Service is now accepting orders for subscriptions to the Library of Congress Subject Headings on CD-ROM--CDMARC Subjects. The product on a single CD-ROM, represents the full LCSH file through the end of March 1988. For 1988, the subscription includes the original disc plus two fully cumulated updates, retrieval software, and a user manual in a three-ring binder. The cost is $300 for U.S. subscribers, and US$370 for international subscribers.
Libraries wishing to use CDMARC subjects must have an IBM PC or compatible with at least 640K RAM, MS/DOS Version 3.1 or higher, and any standard CD-ROM drive. Any printer may be used to generate print output without diacritics. The same hardware will also support other CDMARC products currently under development--CDMARC Names, and CDMARC Bibliographic.
The hardware configuration described does not support printing or display of the extended ALA character set used in the CDMARC products. For screen display of these characters, the PC must be equipped with a Hercules Plus or Hercules InColor graphics card; printed output of the full character set requires the use of a Hewlett Packard LaserJet Plus printer. It is expected that additional hardware options will become available for support of the extended ALA character set.
