Baker & Taylor selects ALII

Library Systems Newsletter [May 1988]

Baker & Taylor has signed an agreement with Advanced Libraries & Information Inc. (ALII) for the purchase of an automated cataloging system to be installed at Baker & Taylor headquarters in Bridgewater, New Jersey. The system will be a customized installation of the cataloging and authority control components of ALIT's Aloha multifunction integrated library system software. It will be used primarily to catalog books using resource files of LC MARC records and records from Baker & Taylor's in-house cataloging files. The system will accommodate Baker & Taylor's MARC format files of Dewey and Sears data. The new system will replace earlier internally developed cataloging systems. It will be configured around a C-ITOH 680 CPU and will have 18 terminals. New production programs to fully utilize the new system are being written by Baker & Taylor's internal EDP staff.

The system will create bibliographic products, including catalog cards, labels, kits, and MARC records. Machine-readable records will be available on magnetic media for distribution to libraries for loading into local automated systems. Although it will be used primarily to support Baker & Taylor's book cataloging, Aloha can also support the cataloging of videos, CDs, and other materials.
