Digital has historically supported large systems by clustering two or more VAX superminis, such as the three processor configuration for the proposed Los Angeles County Public Library system. Word is that Digital will introduce a new Cpu in June 1988, that will run at up to 22 MIPS (millions of instructions per second), placing it squarely in IBM mainframe territory. The computer is reportedly code-named Polar Star. Digital is also rumored to be completing development work on a fault-tolerant processor to compete with the Tandem line and a 386-based VAXmate desktop supermicro that will be IBM-compatible.
