Award-winning library director tapped as Vice President for LSSI West Coast Operations: Gordon Conable takes lead in guiding the nation's first private-sector operation of a large public library system

Germantown. MD. March 3, 1998 - In April, Gordon M. Conable will Join Library Systems & Services (LSSI) as Vice President for West Coast Operations with primary, responsibility for the company's landmark Riverside County Library System project.

Under the direction of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors, LSSI operates thc county's 25 branch library system ---- including bookmobile service and reading rooms -- that serves over a million people. The project, which started last July, marks the first time ever that a large public library system is being operated by a private firm.

According to LSSI's Chief Operating Officer, Frank A. Pezzanite, "LSSI is committed to increasing staff at the libraries, earmarking more dollars for collection development and having Riverside County's libraries open more hours. Since it's no secret that there aren't a lot of dollars available, everything we do must be guided by the absolute best decision-making. That's why we're so proud to have Gordon Conable join us."

Conable is a library professional with over two decades of administrative experience, including nine years as Director of Michigan's Monroe County Library System, where he led the library through major automation projects, established leading-edge public library Internet services, and secured a number of large grants to finance technological innovation. During his tenure, two new branches were opened for a total of 15 in the system, and major upgrades were completed, as well as design work on a variety of' improvement projects.

Award-Winning Accomplishments

Conable has earned national recognition for his award-wining accomplishments. He was the first librarian to be honored as Michigan Public Servant of the Year for his financial management and his advocacy of patron rights. He received the Roll of Honor award from the Freedom to Read Foundation for his national service to libraries. In addition, he was recently honored by the Rockefeller Foundation and four other foundations at a special ceremony.
